10 Most Common Lotus Notes Error Messages and Their Solutions

Lotus Notes email application is used by business the world over. It is known to offer business teamwork functionality that includes sending/receiving emails, instant messaging, user directories, calendars, file sharing, blogs, micro-blogging contact management, team-rooms, to do lists, and discussion forums.
Lotus Notes also allows easy access and integration with other IBM Domino databases and applications.

Database files of Lotus Notes like any other business application are prone to corruption. These may occur due to a number of logical and physical errors.  When you receive an error message, it is not simple annoyances, it is also an opportunity to fix issues with a Notes client or Domino server. Here in this write-up we have listed ten of the most common Lotus Notes error messages and their solutions.

1. 'Your current ID does not specify an Internet certificate for signing'

This is one of the most common errors which surfaces when users set default setting to sign emails. In Lotus Notes this is set using the Public Key Infrastructure of an existing Lotus Notes ID. Here, the client signs messages to other Lotus Notes recipients with the user's public key. However, when the mails are sent via the Internet the keys don't work. For this, you will need to integrate X.509 certificate into Lotus Notes ID. This is not as common as these keys are not generally issued to people who don't need them. When the Notes client signs Internet messages and doesn't find the certificates it causes the error. To get rid of this issue change the default setting of signing messages. If this is not feasible acknowledge the dialog box when it appears.

2. 'Network operation did not complete in a reasonable amount of time'

This is another common problem that many users encounter quite often. There are two ways of resolving it. Open the 'Replicator' page in Notes client and manually activate/replicate the line, "Sending outgoing mail" (or a similarly named line). If this doesn't work, you can open the current 'Location' and check the 'Mail' tab. Here if you find the mail file location is set as 'Local' , change it to 'On Server'. Next, you will need to check the 'Send outgoing mail' field. If the preference is set 'directly to Internet' change it to 'through the Domino server'

3. Lotus Notes error: 'You are not authorized to the database for user's local mail file'

This is a strange problem usually occurs when you try and use an R7 design template with an R6 client as Lotus Notes 6.5.6 client and StdR7Mail template aren't compatible. When you encounter such an error you must delete the local replica and update the server mail file using an R6 mail template for an R6 Notes client install. Once this is done, you need to replicate this back to the user's machine and your problem should be solved.

4. Database error: 'Database Corrupt -- Cannot Allocate Space'

The problem with your Notes client's Desktop.disk is the most common reason behind this error. You can run Compact or Nfixup on the Desktop.dsk to ease this problem. If running Nfixup on the server isn't possible you can also try by deleting cache.ndk and renaming it to bookmark.nsf. Alternately you can also create a new copy of the damaged database to solve this issue. However, keep in mind that you will need to create the new copy at the operating system-level or via File, Database, New Copy in Notes.

5. Lotus Notes 8 migration error: 'Database has not been opened yet'

This error is caused by the LotusScript code when it detects an invalid database object handle and tries to work with the object handle. It usually occurs when the server and/or file path are incorrect or in other cases when the current machine is not able to establish a connection with the target server. It can also happen if the user does not have access to open the target database. The solution lies in detecting where the problem lies and taking corrective measures.

6. Error message when creating agent: 'Error creating product object'

When you encounter this error message all that you need to do is record the error and contact IBM Lotus. You can also take help from the separate Help document where you get detailed troubleshooting ideas from the LSX session.

7. Lotus Notes access error: 'database is not opened yet'

This problem can also arise in Lotus Notes Domino R6 as it allows Lotus Notes databases on one server to access databases on another server that lies in the background. You must remember - prior to Lotus Notes Domino R6, there was no protocol in place to allow this. So, the solution lies in opening the server document of the Lotus Domino server containing the target database, either in Lotus Notes Domino R6 or R7. You can also name the server containing the Web service to the "Trusted Servers" field on the "Security" tab.

8. Domino server error message:' Entry Not Found in Index'

In the past a locally edited policy would result in this problem. You can easily overcome this problem by editing and saving all the defined policies directly on server replica of names.nsf

9. 'The object store that is used by this note was not found'

This error refers to the Lotus Notes Shared Mail which is not usually used any longer as disk space is economical. Also exertion required for the cleanup process is a big challenge and a highly expensive affair. It occurs when a Lotus Notes document that a user is trying to access is not available in the Domino object store. The solution to this problem lies in running 'Collect' task on the database and it will resolve the error.

10. BlackBerry Intellisync error: 'Please see log for details.'

This occurs when you are trying to sync your BlackBerry device with Lotus Notes. When you spot this error one of the ways to get over it, is through over-the-air synchronization instead of depending on your Desktop Manager.
These are some of the most common error scenarios that you would encounter in Lotus Notes. However, if the solutions that we have mentioned above don't resolve your problems, then these problems might corrupt or damage your NSF files. If your Lotus Notes file gets corrupt due to the above physical or logical errors, then in that case, you need to make use of any recovery software which can repair corrupt or damaged files.  These tools have superior features and advanced algorithms that can aid you repair and recover from serious corruption circumstances Stellar Converter for NSF is one such tool that has gained immense popularity in the recent years, thanks to its ease of use and robustness.
